Airport chiefs warn of dangers of Brexit

Brexit vote is a possibility in EU referendum on 23rd June 2016. The United Kingdom votes to either stay in the European Union or to leave it on 23rd June 2016 . Bitter divisons in the Conservative and Labour parties have been exposed in the debate leading up to the vote
Brexit vote is a possibility in EU referendum on 23rd June 2016. The United Kingdom votes to either stay in the European Union or to leave it on 23rd June 2016 . Bitter divisons in the Conservative and Labour parties have been exposed in the debate leading up to the vote

Leaders of some of the UK’s largest airports have backed the UK to remain in the European Union, giving Prime Minister David Cameron a boost in his campaign to stay in the European Union.

The chief executives – including those from Heathrow, Gatwick and Easyjet – signed a letter published in The Times which said the threat of a “Brexit” or EU exit could threaten jobs, investment and growth. London Mayor Boris Johnson has declared his support for Britain leaving the EU .
The letter says: “Business needs unrestricted access to the European market of 500 million people in order to continue to grow, invest and create jobs.
“We believe that leaving the EU would deter investment and threaten jobs. It would put the economy at risk.”

Speaking about the EU’s impact on trade, aviation and British prosperity, Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye  said:
“Heathrow believes that the UK will be better off remaining in a reformed EU. We are the UK’s only hub airport, connecting Britain to over 80 long haul destinations, and handling over a quarter of UK exports – but we recognise that for business to thrive we also need to be part of the single European market.”
He added that membership of the EU has made air travel “affordable and convenient”.

“A vote to remain offers the best of both worlds – it secures our place as a powerhouse in the global economy, while remaining in the world’s largest free trade zone.”

Risks of Brexit

The issue of Air Passenger Duty has not really been discussed yet but it could swing some votes to the campaign to stay in Europe .

Downing Street said the letter was “unprecedented” with prime minister David Cameron pledging to travel to all parts of the UK to make his pro-EU case.

A referendum on whether the UK should stay in the EU will be held on 23 June.

Airport taxis transfers Falkirk serves Edinburgh Airport . The chief executive of Edinburgh Airport has not yet made his position clear , but he is expected to agree with his colleagues at Heathrow and gatwick airports about staying in the European Union.

Edinburgh Airport delays in security hall continue

Edinburgh Airport‘s £25 million new security hall continues to cause delays to fliers in its first few months . It has six lanes compared with the previous 12, but the airport describes them as “high performance” because they separate passengers with bags that need manual searches.
Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson has become the latest high-profile passenger to criticise Edinburgh Airport delays at the security check-in .

She tweeted: “This is maybe the 4th or 5th time I’ve been through the new security @EDI_Airport – never ceases to amaze me how terrible it is. Useless.”
Passengers are advised to allow plenty of time to get through security at the airport .

The exchange came a week after Dragons’ Den star Duncan Bannatyne condemned the “pretty bad system” at Scotland’s busiest airport.

Scotch Whisky Association chief executive David Frost also tweeted: “Thank you Ruth for saying what so many frequent travellers think. It just doesn’t seem to be improving.”

Fellow passenger Stewart Mackinlay tweeted: “Edinburgh travel  used to be great up until they moved security. Absolute shambles now.”

An airport spokesman said: “Ruth clearly wasn’t happy with her experience through the security hall and we apologised for what she viewed as a bad experience. We take on board all passenger feedback as we continue to strive to improve the overall passenger journey throughout the terminal.”

The Summer holiday travel rush has started with Edinburgh Airport reporting its busiest weekend of the year as families head for the sun  . Early booking is recommended for airport taxis from Falkirk  by phoning 01324-883305 .

Edinburgh Airport has pulled out all the stops to help families make a smooth departure with their new  security queue for families .

More than 90,000 people have jetted off from the airport last weekend as the school summer holidays get under way – with top destinations including Malaga, Alicante, Palma and Amsterdam.

But airport bosses are urging travellers to “prepare for security” following a spate of recent delays and hold-ups involving the terminal’s new £25 million security hall.

Now airport chiefs are temporarily bringing in a dedicated family line to help parents and youngsters get through security and “make that part of the journey easier”.

And with the annual Edinburgh trades holiday kicking off next weekend, David Wilson, the airport’s chief operating officer, vowed staff would be “pulling out all the stops”.

He said: “Last month saw over one million passengers travel through the terminal – our busiest May on record and almost ten per cent up on last year.

Airport transfers news – Air passenger duty 50% cut “a genuine game changer”

In November the Smith Commission published proposals  , supported by the main UK political parties, to devolve responsibility for  air passenger duty in Scotland  to the Scottish government. Edinburgh Airport chief executive Gordon Dewar has expressed his opposition to air passenger duty on many occasions , calling it a real competitive disadvantage for the airport .

Airports in England  have called upon the Treasury to ensure that no parts of the country are “disadvantaged” by any reduction in the tax in Scotland, in advance of the UK government setting out draft legislation on these plans by January 25.

AOA chief executive Darren Caplan said despite government attempts to reform APD it still continues to be the highest in the world and represents a barrier to trade, investment and tourism.

A cut in air passenger duty in one part of the country should be matched by a cut everywhere, according to the Airport Operators Association , the trade body that represents more than 50 airports.

He said more needs to be done to tackle the tax in all parts of the UK. “The Smith Commission’s proposal to devolve APD to Scotland is a genuine game changer, given the long-stated ambition of the Scottish Government to reduce APD by 50% in the short-term, to be followed by eventual abolition in the future,” said Caplan.

“Now that the Scottish Government plans to follow our European competitors in taking action on this tax, the Treasury should think seriously about the impact that this will have on the rest of the UK.

“We continue to believe that a cut in APD anywhere should be matched, immediately, by a cut everywhere, so that no parts of the country are disadvantaged in any way, and we urge the Treasury to publish a plan that sets out how and when this can be delivered.”

The Smith Commission was announced by prime minister David Cameron in the wake of the Scottish independence referendum last year.
