Councillors were told the Helix Park is considered a “destination” for play and the design had to show it could cope with a large volume of use from children aged from three to 14, be as iconic as the park itself and the Kelpies, use materials in keeping with the park which were also durable and be innovative.

Rhona Geisler, director of development services, said: “This will be one of the prime play areas in Scotland and it is expected to be widely used.

“There was a lot of community consultation and feedback about what would be required.

“This product has been selected because of durability and is expected to last for 40 years.”

She added it is hoped the project, which is being part-funded by sportscotland, will be a “great” attraction for youngsters.

The Kelpies  in the Helix Park opened to the public in April  . The park opened with a  night-time artworks exhibition on the theme of Scotland as HOME with spectacular light, sound and flame display, by Groupe F, around Andy Scott’s iconic new cultural landmark. A spectacular night-time arts event called HOME launched both the opening of the John Muir Way and the international launch of The Kelpies prior to their opening to the public . On two evenings, 17th and 18th April, a selection of one-off, specially-commissioned night-time artworks illuminated Helix Park, as thousands gathered round the iconic Kelpies for an extraordinary animation of the colossal 300 tonne, 30 metre-high sculptures backed by a pulsating soundtrack.

Groupe F – the pyrotechnic maestros who worked at Big in Falkirk as well as the Millennium illumination of the Eiffel Tower – brought the monuments to horse-powered heritage to life with a dazzling light, flame and sound performance.

Funding was provided by the Big Lottery Fund Living Landmarks programme. In 2005 the Helix project was awarded one of the top four prizes, which kick-started the £43 million project. Edinburgh Airport reports increase in passenger numbers for May

Edinburgh Airport has consolidated its position as the busiest airport in Scotland with its report of a 3.5 per cent increase in May passenger numbers. The airport entrance can get quite congested from about six in the morning because of passengers arriving for early morning flights . A transfer to Edinburgh Airport from Falkirk takes about half an hour. Phone 07576-127097 for transfer bookings.

The airport, owned by Global Infrastructure Partners, said a total of 937,093 passengers passed through its terminals last month.

International passenger numbers are reported to have risen 5.7 per cent year-on-year to 517,543 in total, which the airport said was down to the launch of a number of new routes.

New routes launched in May included three new long-haul destinations linking Edinburgh Airport with Chicago and Philadelphia in the US and Doha in Qatar.

The airport said domestic passenger numbers rose by 0.9 per cent in May from to 419,550 in total.

Chief executive Gordon Dewar said May was “a tremendous month” the airport.

“We enjoyed two of our most successful weeks ever when we launched four international airline routes, something which we’ve never experienced before,” he said.

“We worked hard with our city partners to deliver Edinburgh’s first Middle Eastern route and we’re looking forward to a successful partnership with Qatar Airways who are operating Scotland’s first scheduled Dreamliner.

“The success of these new routes will enhance our global connectivity and ensure we continue to provide our passengers with the best choice possible.

“With the school summer holidays just around the corner, coupled with the Ryder Cup and Edinburgh Festival, we’re looking forward to welcoming many thousands of passengers through our airport over the coming weeks.”

Falkirk hosts Rock the Stadium this weekend

Ronan Keating , Status Quo and 10CC fans are flocking to the Falkirk Stadium for the Rock the Stadium  concerts  this weekend. Ronan Keating  is the Irish singer and song writer who has combined single and album sales in excess of 45 million, holds the Guinness book of records for the amazing total of 30 consecutive Top Ten UK singles and has played live in over 50 countries, and this summer will play for the first time in Central Scotland at the home of Falkirk FC.

Ronan will perform at The Falkirk Stadium on Friday the 21st of June, the first night of the Rock the Stadium weekend.

Ronan said:-

“I am really excited to be performing at the Falkirk Stadium this summer and love playing outdoors in these great venues. What makes it more exciting and something magical is playing to a Scottish audience. I am looking forward to playing with my band and singing my hits as well as some of new songs from my new CD’ Fires.”

. The Falkirk stadium is about a mile from the town centre. The nearest railway station is Falkirk Grahamston. Trains from Glasgow and Edinburgh stop at Falkirk High station. The quickest way to transfer to the stadium is by taxi. Phone 01324-883305 to book a transfer.

Status Quo are the veteran rockers who have been making hits since the sixties. Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi remain the core members of the band. They have a new single and album out which they premiered on the BBC’s One Show last week.

10cc  hit their peak in the 1970s with I’m not in love and Wakll Street . The band initially consisted of four musicians—Graham GouldmanEric StewartKevin Godley, and Lol Creme—who had written and recorded together for some three years, before assuming the “10cc” name in 1972.

10cc  consisted of  two strong songwriting teams, one ‘commercial’ and one ‘artistic’, but both teams injected sharp wit into lyrically dextrous and musically varied songs. Stewart and Gouldman were predominantly pop-song-writers, who created most of the band’s  most commercial  songs.  Godley and Creme were the predominantly experimental half of 10cc, featuring an Art School sensibility who graduated to video production.

Falkirk Grahamston is the  nearest railway station . Trains from Glasgow and Edinburgh stop at Falkirk High station. The quickest way to transfer to the stadium is by taxi. Phone 01324-883305 to book a transfer.
